Skin (cross-section)

The skin is an organ that covers the body and protects it from the outside world. Its thickness varies from 0.5mm (on the eyelids) to 5mm (on the soles of the feet). Examining a cross-section of skin under a microscope reveals three main layers: the epidermis, the dermis and the hypodermis. The skin enables the body to perform functions that are essential to survival, such as maintaining body temperature, providing protection, perceiving sensation, maintaining immunity and synthesising vitamin D.
