5 facts to better understand "overday aging"

Researchers at Vichy have dedicated themselves to understanding the phenomenon of “overday” facial aging. Here are 5 ways you can learn more about it and how to prevent it…

What is overday aging?

50% of women claim to feel they look older in the evening compared to the morning, and there is clinical proof that supports this theory. Aurelie Tripet, Scientific Communications Manager at L'Oréal, explains that "the biological mechanisms of the skin work in 24-hour rhythms" aka circadian patterns. Tests showed that older skin takes 6 times longer (30 hours) to repair itself than young skin (6 hours). These results mean that older skin does not have the time to recover in the space of a 24-hour day. The difference in the appearance and quality of skin from morning to evening is called “overday aging”.

How is overday ageing measured scientifically?

In order to measure overday aging, Vichy took 3 factors into account: self-perception, external perception and clinical evidence.
Participants in the study replied to a quiz in which they observed signs of aging. Vichy scientists then conducted research into the biological degradation of skin quality over the course of the day. The results confirmed the hypothesis: the skin, especially when we're older, develops signs of aging throughout the day.

What are the signs?

The signs of overday aging vary from woman to woman, and to different degrees of intensity. Vichy research revealed the most common signs of overday aging are skin redness, dullness and the apparition of wrinkles throughout the day. Those with sensitive skin may also find their face feels tights and dehydrated, or that blemishes look more apparent.

Is overday aging linked to long-term skin aging?

There is a clear connection between how your skin degrades during the day, and the signs of long-term aging that are beginning to appear on your complexion. The silver lining to overday aging is that it acts as a forewarning of long-term signs of aging. With this knowledge, you can act before the signs develop permanently.

How is overday aging treated?

The Liftactiv Supreme range has been developed specifically to target the signs of overday aging, providing continuous correction throughout the day. For example, the new Serum 10 Supreme, highly-concentrated in powerful anti-aging active ingredients, helps to keep skin smooth, radiant and fresh-faced, no matter what your watch says!
